Hervey Bay Community Access Assoc Inc – Established 1996

Back in 1995 a group of families who had children with a disability wanted their children to have opportunities the same as every other child in the Hervey Bay community.  The group approached the office of Families in Maryborough and both groups worked hard to achieve a support “agency” that would offer support to their child and some much needed respite for the parents.

If it wasn’t for the dedication and determination of those original families maybe HBCAA wouldn’t be what it is today?  The families worked hard to ensure the agency had a solid foundation by developing a strong Mission Statement and Vision together with an empowering set of Service Philosophies.  When Disability Services introduced the Disability Services Quality System (DSQS) involving 10 Service Standards in 2005, it was amazing to see how close the 10 Standards aligned with the Service Philosophies which were developed back in 1995 (10 years earlier).  Just goes to show those families knew what they were doing and again much credit must be given to them.

In the last 15 years HBCAA has grown and grown – we have taken steps forward and then many steps backwards.  We have appreciated the good times and we have survived the bad times.  HBCAA was one of the first organisations to be accredited under the DSQS in August 2006 and we have maintained our accreditation since.

HBCAA currently supports approximately 100 people one on one every week in Hervey Bay and surrounding areas and we achieve this with 50 dedicated support workers.  Our income has doubled in the past 2 years.  Currently our biggest threat is to manage this growth responsibly so we can maintain quality support and not a quantity of support.

HBCAA is celebrating 15 years of existence in Hervey Bay by providing support for people with a disability in Hervey Bay and surrounding areas this year and part of our year of celebration we are holding a Fun / Sports Day on Wednesday 13^th July 2011 at the lower part of Dayman Park, Urangan.

The fun/sports day will commence at 9.00 am with the events starting at 10.00 am.  Some of the events include, Tug of War, Egg & Spoon, Throng Throwing, Tunnel Ball, Boccè and Shot-put. .  The community is very welcome to attend on the day. 

The catering for the day will be done by the Fraser Lions and we would like to thank them for their generous support.
